Abstract

Growing traffic motivates both an increase of channels in WDM systems and an increase of the channel data rate to 10 or 40 Gb/s. Upgrading an existing noise-limited fiber plant requires 6 dB or more increase in launched power or equivalent improvements in receiver sensitivity.
