Making Use of a Two Stage Multiplexing Scheme in a WDM Network

Abstract

WDM networks use optical line terminals (OLTs) and add/drop multiplexers (OADMs) to provide lightpaths, which are end-to-end all-optical connections on a particular wavelength through the network. Most OLTs and OADMs use single-stage multiplexing and demultiplexing, where the desired wavelengths to be dropped/added are separated from the passthrough wavelengths in a single multiplexing step. Many high-wavelength-count systems today, however, are using multi-tiered multiplexing methods, where the WDM wavelengths are first demultiplexed into bands, and each band is then demultiplexed into individual channels.
