Abstract

A remarkable challenge exists for the communication systems of tomorrow. By the year 2000, it is predicted that over 20 million computers will be interconnected for the exchange of information, and we are now faced with the imminent arrival of a multimedia society built around the sharing of sound, textual, and video data.
