Abstract

Integrated-optic components combining passive wavelength filtering with active elements are being developed for wavelength-division multiplexed (WDM) networks to provide functions such as WDM detection, switching, and routing. Although InP-based components potentially offer the highest functionality, InP-based filters tend to be significantly polarization-dependent, while networks with WDM channel spacings of 1.6 nm (as currently under investigation) require a TE-TM shift of <~0.1 nm and ≪1 dB of polarization-dependent loss.
