Abstract
The use of fiber-optic links (FOLs) for carrying microwave signals has shown great potential. The nearly lossless transmission of RF-modulated optical signals over fibers can simplify the design of a communication link in which it is undesirable to carry the RF signals via microwave cables. Two limiting features of the microwave FOL are the optical carrier modulation depth that can be imposed for a given input RF signal and the maximum optical power that can be incident on the photodetector without excessive nonlinearities1 or damage.2
