Dependence of fiber Bragg grating thermal stability on grating fabrication process

Abstract

Stability of different grating types was studied at 600°C during 600 hours. We followed the evolution of the index modulation amplitude Δnmod and mean index variation Δnmean of Types I and IIA gratings1 realized in high germanium content fibers (GF), and gratings realized in hydrogenated highly germanium-doped and standard fibers (HGF and HSF). Type I grating is associated with positive photoinduced index change (Ah), and Type IIA with negative Δn. We show that, at this temperature, HSF-gratings only follow rigorously the law proposed by,2 GF-gratings experience strong Δnmean variations, disturbing the aging characteristics determination, and HGF-gratings have the same behavior as Type I GF-gratings, with a higher decay.3
