Thermal reliability of Bragg gratings written in hydrogen-sensitized fibers

Abstract

Gratings are now of great importance to many applications involving optical fibers. Typically, gratings are written in fibers with germanium-doped silica cores. These gratings have been demonstrated to exhibit superior photosensitivity when loaded with molecular hydrogen or deuterium at high pressures.1 The enhanced photosensitivity enables one to readily achieve high refractive index changes in any GeO2-doped fiber. In this work, the thermal reliability of gratings in hydrogen-loaded fibers is studied.
