Abstract
In long-haul transmission systems, a single-mode silica optical fiber has been the most suitable medium because of its high bandwidth and high transparency. However, in short distance communication such as broadband residential area network, ATM-LAN, interconnection, etc., the small core of the single mode optical fiber requires high-accuracy alignment in the fiber connection and junction, which dramatically increases the cost of the whole system.
