Abstract
Optical fiber communications systems are increasingly seeking high-performance in-fiber devices for higher-order mode dispersion compensation, ASE filtering in optical amplifiers and gain-equalization of multiwavelength dense wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) systems. This need for intermodal convertors, polarization convertors, and wavelength-dependent loss elements is elegantly met by a new class of versatile multifunctional devices called long-period gratings.
