Abstract

Applications such as gain-equalization in erbium-doped fiber amplifier,1,2 and elimination of unnecessary Stokes’ orders in cascaded Raman amplifier /laser3 require a wavelength-dependent loss element with very low back reflection. Photo-induced long-period fiber gratings; which operate in the transmission mode have found a niche in these applications because of their good performance and ease of manufacture. These devices are based on the principle of coupling the forward propagating fundamental guided mode in the core to discrete lossy cladding modes for wavelengths that satisfy the phase-matching condition.
