Abstract

Optical transmitters using an integrated electroabsorptive modulator at bit rates of up to 10 Gbit/s are of increasing interest, as compared to directly modulated transmitters. The zero dispersion property of the conventional fiber at the wavelength close to 1.30 µm make the 1.3-µm electroabsorption modulated laser (EML) even more attractive than the 1.55-µm EML due to the non-existence dispersion penalty. The modulation speed of the EML is limited only by the RC time constant in the modulator part. EML devices with small enough device capacitance enable us to realize transmitters with speeds over 10 Gbit/s without the complication of the resonance frequency as incurred in directly modulated DFB lasers. In addition, EML devices can be designed with a high enough extinction ratio and its penalty can be virtually eliminated. Here we report the first penalty-free transmission results over 48 km of nondispersion-shifted fiber using a 1.3-µm wavelength integrated EML device at a bit rate of 10 Gbit/s.
