Abstract

Fiber devices, such as the EDFA, the 4-port coupler, and the Bragg-grating filter are now well established components and are widely available. The tutorial concentrates on prospects for new devices, such as DFB fiber lasers, fiber amplifiers for new wavelengths, acousto-optic switches, and frequency shifters. New glasses, in particular, are expected to have a major impact on fiber components, which will exploit large increases in nonlinear coefficient and acousto-optic merit.
