Abstract

Eight-by-eight strictly nonblocking thermo-optic (TO) matrix switches have been developed in silica-based waveguides.1,2 These switches have been applied as key components in photonic intermodule-connector systems.3,4 In conventional TO switches, however, TO bias power4 is needed for all the switching units all the time to cancel the phase errors caused by slight fabrication errors. In this paper we report the fabrication of a new 8×8 TO matrix switch that does not require the use of bias power.
