Abstract
One of the most attractive strategies for upgrading the already-installed standard-fiber network for high-capacity 1.55-μm transmission is the use of fiber-optic dispersion management.1 Although the basic potential of this strategy has been demonstrated in various experiments,2,3 there has not yet been an in-depth analysis to determine the optimum fiber-optic possible setup alternative equalizer arrangement. Figure 1 depicts two possible setup alternatives—a precompensation scheme and a postcompensation scheme. In our calculations each compensator is assumed to compensate completely for the accumulated linear dispersion of the preceding or following standard fiber, yielding a net dispersion of zero.
