Abstract
It has recently been demonstrated1,2 that degradation in optically amplified system performance due to polarization-dependent gain can be circumvented by polarization modulation of the transmitted signal. Experiments have shown that although there is a significant improvement in the mean Q factor, residual fluctuations remain. This paper presents the results of a simulator developed to model optically amplified systems that use high-speed polarization modulation.
