Abstract

The growth of telecommunication services requires the enhancement of the existing transport network in the core area. As a next step in the evolution of the transport network an optical network is proposed which will use wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) for transmission and cross-connecting.1 This provides simple cross-connecting of high bitrate streams resulting in a universal and future-proof transport network and promising lower costs. Mechanisms for network supervision and protection are necessary for a proper network operation. By the described approach means are provided for an efficient and compact operation and maintenance of high bitrate streams.
