Abstract

For many submarine systems, there is an urgent need for 2.488-Gbit/s transmission over distances greater than 300 km. In this work a detailed comparison of a simple electroabsorption-modulator laser (EA laser) with a Mach-Zehnder modulator (M-Z) in 2.488-Gbit/s unrepeatered transmission systems is made for what we believe to be the first time. Experimental results are presented, showing the possibility of using simple EA lasers at distances greater than 300 km.
