The future of long-haul, high-capacity transmission

Abstract

Progress to ever-higher performance transmission systems, judged by the span × bandwidth criterion, appears set to continue through the 1990's with the imminent introduction of 10-GBit/s systems offering regenerator spans around the 80-100-km mark. Laboratory results are way in excess of even this, often using WDM to take capacities into the 20-100Gbit/s region.
