Long-term stability in the frequency characteristics of a highly-frequency-stabilized light source in the 1.55-µm band

Abstract

Light sources with stable and reliable frequencies are required as frequency references in optical-fiber communications, for example, in a wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) system. Research to achieve such technology is now being enthusiastically promoted. However, there is no conventional stable laser source in the 1.55-µm wavelength band. We have stabilized the frequency of a distributed-feedback (DFB) laser diode (LD) with the lasing frequency locked to the bottom of the HCN absorption line.1 In this paper we present the long-term stability of this frequency-stabilized light source.
