Abstract
Considerable attention is currently being devoted to optical phase conjugation of lightwave signals. The two primary reasons for interest in phase conjugation per se have been the use of mid-system spectral inversion to compensate fiber chromatic dispersion1-4 and fiber nonlinearity.5-9 Since phase conjugation and frequency shifting are often inextricably combined, phase conjugation has also been used in applications where the primary interest is wavelength shifting. The phase conjugation of concern in this paper occurs in a single spatial mode with all waves traveling in the same direction.
