Abstract

The wavelength-dependent gain-saturation characteristics of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) make the use of channel-equalization and gain-control techniques essential for their use in wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) optical networks. A particular problem in a practical WDM system is the necessity for re-equalization in the event of the removal or loss of one or more input channels.
