Abstract
In photonic networks that use simple all-optical components for high-speed signal processing, signal monitoring and channel dropping to the electrical-network layer will still be important issues. Semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) can perform many different functions, and it has already been demonstrated that they can simultaneously amplify and detect at 1.2 Gbit/s with an impressive sensitivity of −29.5 dBm.1 Similarly, a specially designed SOA with a detector section has resulted in detection bandwidths of 7 GHz.2 Here we demonstrate that even when the SOA performs a complicated function, such as wavelength conversion, the signal can be monitored with no observable error floor at 5 Gbit/s.
