Abstract

High-speed electroabsorption (EA) modulators have become essential components in multigigabit long-haul light-wave communication systems. These modulators are suitable for stable generation of sech2 transform-limited optical pulses for optical-soliton transmission systems.1 Recently, they have been used as in-line optical gates to reshape and retime solitons in order to overcome the Gordon-Haus limit2 and as optical demultiplexers.3 Such applications, however, require polarization-insensitive modulators because optical polarization control is very difficult in the transmission lines.
