Abstract
At present, there is a need to handle data at a relatively low speed while the trunk transmission itself could well be at a very high speed. This has led to much interest in all-optical techniques for time-division demultiplexing. Although multiplexing can be easily implemented with passive components, demultiplexing is more complicated because it requires the active selection of a particular channel within a high-speed stream of data.
