Abstract
Fiber transport products operating at 10 Gbit/s are poised to enter the marketplace by 1996. Although this deployment will ease the pressure on existing networks, penetration of broadband services will continue to drive bandwidth requirements beyond their capabilities. Because fiber networks are already extensively deployed, the reluctance of operators to invest in new outside plant under today's competitive pressures will send them in search of transmission systems operating beyond 10 Gbit/s. In emerging global networks and among new entrants in competitive markets, investment will be forced into higher-rate transport because of the inherent economic advantages. Allowing for the usual product development cycle, this next generation equipment should be introduced in the late 1990s.
