Abstract
The current approach of implementing 10-and 20-Gbit/s TDM transmitter/receiver subsystems based on intensity modulation and direct detection requires very-broadband electronics. At 40 Gbit/s and beyond, existing IC technologies can no longer achieve the performance required and narrowband optical time-domain multiplexing/demultiplexing (OTDM) becomes indispensable.1-3 In this paper we report on the implementation of a 40-Gbit/s transmitter/receiver subsystem that used high-speed modulators for optical multiplexing and demultiplexing and on transmission over 140 km of dispersion- shifted fiber (DSF) with very low sensitivity penalty.
