Subcarrier multiplexing of packet headers in a WDM optical network and a novel ultrafast header clock-recovery technique

Abstract

Recently, a number of projects aimed at the implementation of optical packet-switched network prototypes have been announced. A common element is the effort to keep packets in optical form from the source node to the destination node, avoiding electro-optical conversion at intermediate nodes. However, network nodes must extract some packet-addressing information to decide whether to receive or to route (and where to route) the optical packets. A critical issue is how to accomplish this in an efficient way.
