Abstract
In 1996, 5-Gbit/s transoceanic optical submarine cable systems using Er-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) repeaters will be in service in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Research interest is now being directed toward the development of optical- amplifier (OA) systems capable of operation at several tens of gigabits per second. WDM technology with NRZ signals is one way to increase a total capacity. It can be implemented in an OA system as long as the transmission distance is limited. Optical soliton transmission technology that balances the effects of dispersion and nonlinearity is the key to realizing transoceanic systems operating at tens of gigabits per second because limitations mainly due to fiber nonlinearities become significant in long-haul NRZ systems beyond 10 Gbit/s.
