Abstract
High-power laser diodes continue to evolve, revolutionizing the laser-diode industry. Previous advancements in the high- power operation of 980-nm single-diode lasers operating at powers of the order of 100 mW cw contributed to the rapid introduction of the Er:fiber amplifier into telecommunications systems. Advances in higher-power single-mode lasers, where greater than 1 W cw has been demonstrated, may also result in a similar advancement in telecommunications architectures. This paper presents data on the state-of-the-art results of high- power diode lasers as they are applied to the optical-fiber industry.
