Abstract

Accurate values of effective group indices of optical waveguides are particularly important for calibrating the scale of optical time-domain reflectometry (OTDR) and fault-locating instruments for single-mode fibers and for providing data for accurate device modeling for integrated optical waveguides. Here results are presented for several samples taken from different fiber types (including standard, reduced-core, dispersion-shifted, polarization-maintaining, and dispersion-compensating fibers) and, for the first time to our knowledge, from ion-exchanged glass waveguides of different geometrical and processing parameters.
