Abstract
An all-optical network that makes use of wavelength routing and multiplexing to exploit the potential bandwidth of fiber is being considered by the Optical Network Technology Consortium (ONTC).1 Such a network must be able to support all types of existing and future network services, from voice circuits to gigabit services on demand (e.g., a 10-Gbit/s connection between two supercomputers). The network must also be scalable to handle large geographical areas, while having the flexibility to adapt to shifting traffic patterns.
