Abstract

As lightwave communication systems progress towards higher data rates, more research in data transmission has been done so that new schemes and architectures can be used to exploit both the potential of the optical fiber and the maturing semi-conductor-device technology. One such scheme is the trans-mission and reception of data in a burst mode, as encountered in data links. There has been renewed interest in burst-mode data at high speeds.1 However, to our knowledge, there was as yet been no report of a de-coupled differential photoreceiver that could operate simultaneously beyond 2.0 Gbit/s and with different data formats. Although there has been a report of a hybrid de-coupled differeritial photoreceiver,2 its operation was limited to continuous-mode data.
