Abstract

Narrow-linewidth monolithic fiber lasers using intracore fiber-grating reflectors are of considerable interest for various applications in fiber-optic communications and instrumentation. At present, standing-wave single-frequency erbium-fiber lasers that use two grating reflectors for cavity feedback and wave-length selectivity have been reported.'-'' To suppress mode hopping caused by spatial hole burning in the amplifying medium and to permit robust single-frequency operation, effective longitudinal-mode discrimination was achieved by reducing the cavity length to a few centimeters such that the laser mode spacing became comparable to the grating bandwidth." Here, we demonstrate integrated, coupled-cavity, fiber-grating lasers of longitudinal geometry in which multiple passive and active Fabry-Perot resonators are used for longitudinal-lasing-mode control of the laser. Two laser configurations for stable single- and dual-frequency operation are reported. The approach of a coupled-cavity laser for efficient mode discrimination in a single-frequency laser is found to be an alternative to the reduction of the laser length to dimensions of ~ 1-2 cm.
