Dispersion Compensation in Lightwave Systems

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

The ability to transmit lightwave signals over global distances by using optical amplifiers has refocused attention on the limitations imposed by chromatic dispersion in lightwave systems. This is particularly true in embedded networks where the use of dispersion-shifted fiber for operation at 1550 nm is no longer an economically viable option. In this tutorial a review is given of demonstrated techniques for combatting dispersion, with emphasis on the relative merits and limitations of each. The use of dispersion tailoring for improving the nonlinear performance of lightwave systems will also be discussed.
