Abstract
The introduction of optical-fiber amplifiers (OFAs) has allowed providers of long-distance services to dramatically increase regenerator span distances and reduce the cost of providing service without loss of transmission quality. In this presentation we report the first, to our knowledge, commercial application of OFAs used as booster amplifiers in the U.S. domestic terrestrial long-haul network. We describe the first installed route, detail the performance of the OFAs, and describe the system performance with as much as 158 km of dispersion-shifted fiber. It is shown that this standard directly modulated, direct-detection system, using production OFA booster amplifiers, meets the existing performance standards of nonamplified systems.
