Abstract
Reflection of dispersion-broadened pulses from optical-fiber Bragg gratings having a linear chirp of the grating period has been reported1–3 as a means to compensate for dispersion-induced pulse broadening. We examine here the dispersion-compensating properties of side-written chirped gratings in which the chirp has been self-induced by a half-Gaussian intensity distribution of the UV writing beam. The results of numerical and theoretical calculations using coupled-mode theory show that with a half-Gaussian refractive-index profile, the filter can compress dispersion-broadened pulses by factors of 2 to 3.
