Abstract
Optical frequency-division multiplexing (FDM) and time-division multiplexing (TDM) will play important roles in rapidly recon figurable networks that require rapidly tunable laser transmitters1,2 and optical time-slot interchangers.3 A network example showing the assignment of optical FDM paths to an optical cross-connect (OXC) node is illustrated in Fig. 1. The optical node consists of a frequency router and an FDM/TDM switch. The FDM-based cross-connect nodes that offer fast frequency switching and time-slot interchange can improve the routing performance and flexibility of a reconfigurable network.
