Abstract
We show that there is an inherent transmission-capacity penalty for all burst-mode optical receivers due to the finite holding time constant τf of the adaptive threshold control circuit. The fundamental degradation of the system depends on a decay parameter k. k should be ≤ 0.25 for a system power penalty of 1 dB. For ATM packets, the capacity penalty is approximately 12%, independent of the bit rate.
