Abstract

Photonic frequency-division-multiplexing (FDM) switching systems are expected to lead to large-capacity transport networks. Moreover, it is possible to design a compact switching architecture to perform more complicated functions, such as routing, switching, and service segregation. This paper describes a photonic ATM switch architecture using a frequency-routing-type time-division interconnection network, called FRONTIERNET. The architecture permits a novel implementation of an output-buffering scheme that overcomes the bottleneck in receiving and storing concurrent high-speed optical cells. An experimental FDM output buffer is demonstrated.
