Abstract
The introduction of new broadband services will produce significant traffic growth that could lead the existing electronic switching nodes to saturation. In this frame, a photonic highbit-rate switching fabric, capable of routing ATM cells and solving cell contention, has been proposed1,2 (patent pending). One of its key functions is the optical buffering of ATM cells, based on fiber loop memories: to reduce the amount of optical hardware the exploitation of the wavelength domain is proposed.3
