Abstract
Cascaded erbium-doped fiber-optical amplifiers will be deployed on a large scale in future lightwave systems, especially for the next generation of transoceanic cables. In such links, the filtering behavior of the amplifier gain itself has been recently pointed out as one of the main phenomena that influence system performance and design.1,2 This paper reviews the relevant features related to this so-called “gain-filtering” or “self-filtering” effect.
