Abstract

The use of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) for transoceanic transmission systems implies that EDFAs must achieve stable operation for 25 yr in the repeater-housing environinent. The influence of hydrogen on standard fibers has been extensively studied.1.2 We present here the long-term behavior of erbium-doped fibers (EDFs) under hydrogen exposure. We reported in Ref. 3 that only the fiber matrix is affected.3 Previously published results indicate that loss increases could be tremendous.4
