Abstract
This paper describes a MITRE IR&D project, A-ONE (for all-optical network"), whose objectives are to develop a research testbed for prototyping optical-networking technology and concurrently to develop advanced applications that can take advantage of such technology. Key challenges that have been addressed are reliable transmission of high-speed digital anti wideband analog signals in a nonideal communications environment and the design of a network architecture that takes advantage of the benefits and overcomes the constraints of optical networking. The discussion presents the research that has been carried out to establish the network, including the protocols and other software that have been developed, the analog and digital applications that operate over the network. and the network performance that has been measured.
