Abstract

In next-generation transoceanic optical networks the polarization-dependent properties of fiber and optical components may limit the use of potential broad-band characteristics and polarization-multiplexing ability.1,2 Namihira reported an optical isolator that had a polarization-mode dispersion of 0.8 ps, which is relatively large compared with the 0.1ps/km square-root dependence of the dispersion of optical-fiber cable.
