Abstract
Ultrahigh-speed clock recovery will be the key technology for transmission systems with extremely high bit rates. To date, all-optical clock extraction has been reported with self-pulsating laser diodes,1 and 10-GHz operation of a phase-lock loop (PLL) has been demonstrated by using a traveling-wave laser-diode amplifier (TW-LDA) as a phase detector.2 In this report successful 32-Gbit/s, 20-km optical TDM transmission is demonstrated; timing extraction is performed by the newly developed PLL with TW-LDA. This is the first experiment to our knowledge in which an all-optical 1:4 demultiplexer, decision circuit, and error detector are driven by an 8-GHz retimed clock that is directly extracted from the 32-Gbit/s optical signal.
