Abstract

Tunable lasers are perhaps the most critical component for future wavelength-division-multiplexed (WDM) networks and switching systems. Indeed, the number of channels in such networks is limited directly by the tuning range of the source. Presently, tunable distributed-feedback (DFB) and distributed- Bragg-reflector (DBR) lasers are the most developed tunable lasers. However, the typical tuning range for these sources is rather limited. Recently several new tunable laser structures have been reported with significantly improved tuning range. In this talk we review the operational principles, potential, performance, and limitation of these new classes of widely tunable lasers and evaluate their potential for high-capacity WDM networks.
