Abstract
Planar waveguide technology integration of an optical amplifier on the same substrate with passive optical components, such as star couplers, taps, splitters, etc., is attractive. We report here a 15dB net gain measurement in a 4.5cm long waveguide amplifier fabricated from Er3+- doped soda lime glass films RF-sputtered on oxidized silicon substrates. To the best of our knowledge this is the highest gain per unit length (3.3dB/cm) reported so far in planar waveguide amplifiers. The lifetime of the Er3+ (4I13/2) state as a function of pump energy at two Er3+ concentrations was measured and is compared here to that of Er3+ in silica fiber amplifiers. Significant decrease in lifetime of the Er3+(4I13/2) state was observed with the increase in pump power.
