Abstract
The enormous optical bandwidth exceeds the speed at which it can be accessed by today’s electronic transmission facilities. To exploit this huge bandwidth, concurrent transmission methods must be employed. Fortunately, the optical bandwidth can be wavelength division multiplexed to create hundreds or thousands of (lower bandwidth) channels, each of which matches the present transmission speeds.
