Abstract
Performance simulation using CAD tools will play an increasingly important role in future high-performance telecommunication system and network design.1 In particular, the emerging 10-Gbit/s synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH)2 will require careful evaluation of component limitations. To meet this requirement, we are developing a suite of simulation tools which give accurate prediction of direct-detection digital link performance. We highlight the value of this CAD approach by showing that a noncoherent FSK (NC-FSK) 1.53-μm step-index fiber link has >2-Tbit/skm capability with optimum all-pass optical equalization.
