Abstract
The exploitation of high-speed, WDM, and coherent optical systems will require a laser transmitter which not only exhibits a high modulation bandwidth but is also of narrow linewidth and low chirp. The active OE element must also be manufacturable, highly reliable, maintenance and drift free, and potentially low cost. Various solutions have been proposed including low chirp DFB structures, external modulators, and external cavity lasers with a bulk optic grating to achieve linewidth narrowing. However, their complexity, size, and stability make them unsuitable for field deployment.
